OUTBREAK:  Leprosy in Arkansas \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Brought Here by Whom?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In an emergency room in Arkansas, the patient exhibits dark red
\nboils, her skin numb. Another case of leprosy in America. Not far away, a tuberculosis-infected
\nillegal immigrant coughs while on break at the local chicken processing plant \u00e2\u20ac\u201c
\nspreading his infectious germs across the break room table. His children, also
\ncarrying the disease, which had been all but eradicated from the United States
\nyears ago, join hundreds of children at the local public school. Crossing the
\nMexican border, in a pickup truck filled with \u00e2\u20ac\u0153migrant workers\u00e2\u20ac\u009d coming to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153do
\nthe jobs Americans don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in our fields and food processing plants, is the
\nIslamic terrorist who purposefully infected himself with smallpox in order to
\nspread the deadly disease to unsuspecting Americans nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Fact or fiction? Well over 12 million illegal aliens have invaded our
\ncountry from our southern border, circumventing the strict health requirements
\nthat are enforced for those entering legally \u00e2\u20ac\u201c requirements that include
\nensuring the entrants are free from infectious diseases. Our own government
\ncontinues its push to give them legitimacy, in some cases welcoming them with
\nopen arms under the guise of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153they are doing the work Americans just don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nHowever, we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know who they are \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or what horrific contagions they may have
\nbrought with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In Northwest Arkansas, the state health department has been
\ntracking nine cases of Marshall Island citizens infected with leprosy.
\nAccording to a report from KFSM, the CBS affiliate in Fayetteville, Northwest
\nArkansas has a large population of Marshall Island immigrants who have been
\nbrought here to work in the poultry plants in the area. Although, according to
\nDr. Jennifer Bingham in the KFSM report, leprosy is curable with proper
\nattention to treatment, they are not able to enlist compliance from the
\npatients to complete the process. The report also lists 100 cases of
\ntuberculosis in the Springdale area.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In subsequent reports, the Arkansas Department of Health has
\ndownplayed the importance of the outbreak of leprosy in Northwest Arkansas,
\nstating that 95 percent of the population is genetically resistant to the
\ndisease. Leprosy is a major concern in the Marshall Islands and with residents
\nfrom the Marshall Islands being exempt from immigration laws \u00e2\u20ac\u201c including
\nmedical requirements \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is no small surprise that Northwest Arkansas, with a
\nlarge concentration of Marshall Island residents working in the poultry plants,
\nis tracking nine cases of the disease.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In an effort to calm fears of tuberculosis outbreak, the Ft.
\nSmith, Arkansas, Times Record states that in 2007, there were 106 cases of
\ntuberculosis reported statewide, with 21 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c nearly a full quarter \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in the
\nNorthwest Arkansas area. Spread through the inhalation of infected particles
\nfrom an infected person who coughs, tuberculosis is easier spread than leprosy.
\nBoth stories, regardless of the downplaying from government officials, are
\nreason for concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Concerns over leprosy in America are not new, but rarely reported.
\nOn March 15, 2005, Columbia University\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Columbia News Service published an
\narticle by Ben Whitford, titled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Leprosy in America:  New Cause for
\nConcern\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

While leprosy outbreaks in the United States are rare,
\napproximately 130 cases per year, Whitford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s report states that in 2004, 100
\ncases of leprosy were diagnosed in the United States among the immigrant
\npopulation. That was double from the year 2000.  Dr. William Levis, head
\nof New York\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hansen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Disease Clinic, stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s creeping into the
\nU.S.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  He is further quoted as calling it an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153epidemic\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that has already
\nreached such proportions in Texas, New York and California \u00e2\u20ac\u201c all states with
\nhigh populations of immigrants.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It has become politically incorrect to discuss the possibility of
\nillegal aliens bringing tuberculosis, leprosy and other infectious diseases
\nacross the border. This tolerance to the lax policies regarding immigration,
\nappeasement of La Raza and other special interests and the ease in which
\nillegal aliens can blend into American society, leaves us wide open to
\nsomething far more sinister and deadly \u00e2\u20ac\u201c bioterrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Like the economic and health issues regarding illegal immigration
\nthat have plagued our nation, the threat of terrorism from our porous southern
\nand northern borders is largely ignored, but a very real possibility.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

After September 11, the possibility of smallpox being used in a
\nbioterror attack became a concern with the Center for Disease Control. Long
\nsince eradicated from the U.S., this highly contagious, deadly disease \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or any
\nother \u00e2\u20ac\u201c can walk across the border with Mohammed as easily as tuberculosis
\ncomes with your local tomato picker.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Tuberculosis, leprosy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c an epidemic?  The reality of
\nbioterrorism from our porous borders? The possibilities could cause panic among
\nthe population. The news would spread faster than the diseases themselves,
\ntherefore the news is controlled, with an apparent goal to downplay
\nconcerns.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

People have the right to know that government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s open border policy
\nhas put them in danger, for more reasons than one. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe for a second
\nthe cases in Northwest Arkansas are isolated incidences.  This is only the
\nbeginning. <\/span><\/p>\n
