Arkansas Taxes Up $642
\nMillion Under Huckabee, Report Shows<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In November, <\/span><\/strong><\/em>Huckabee repeatedly defended
\nhis record<\/span><\/strong><\/em>, calling himself a “fiscal conservative” and <\/span><\/strong><\/em>pointing out that he had cut
\ntaxes 90 times as governor.<\/span><\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

But according to data
\ncompiled for Cybercast News Service by Stephen Slivinski, director of budget
\nstudies at the libertarian Cato Institute, <\/span><\/em><\/strong>the tax hikes Huckabee
\nsupported between 1997 and 2007 were far heftier than his tax cuts<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. (Slivinski compiled his
\nreport from tax records available at the bi-partisan National Conference of
\nState Legislatures.)<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The numbers show that taxes
\nincreased at an average of $15 per person per fiscal year during Huckabee’s
\ntenure (1996-2007). The net tax cuts supported by Huckabee from fiscal years
\n1997 to 2007 totaled $222 million, while net tax increases supported or
\nunopposed by Huckabee totaled $864 million.<\/o:p><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The net increase in taxes
\nsupported by Huckabee, therefore, equaled $642 million. With a population
\nslightly declining – from 2.7 million in 1997 to 2.5 million in 2007 – <\/span><\/em><\/strong>net taxes collected in
\nArkansas rose by more than $3 billion during Huckabee’s gubernatorial tenure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
