LITTLE ROCK <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d Gov. Mike Huck-<\/span>abee Thursday denounced a bill <\/span>by Sen. Jim Holt that would
\nde\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ny
\nstate benefits to illegal immi\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>grants as un-Christian, un-Amer\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ican, irresponsible and
\nanti-life. <\/span>Holt,
\nR-Springdalc, replied lat\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>er that Christian charity does not<\/span><\/p>\n



\n<\/span><\/p>\n

include turning a blind eye to lawbreaking.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Senate Bill 206, filed Wednes\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>day, also would require proof of <\/span>citizenship to register to vote and <\/span>would require state agencies to <\/span>report suspected cases of people living in the country
\nillegally.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Somebody needs to ask Sen. <\/span>Holt what welfare this bill would <\/span>stop,” Huckabee said in a ques-<\/span>tion-and-answer period with re-<\/span><\/p>\n

Holt replied, “I think the po\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>litically correct movement has <\/span>misconstrued what
\ncompassion <\/span>really means. They think com\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>passion means that any person <\/span>can disrespect our
\nlaws and that <\/span>we’re supposed
\nto be tolerant and let them get away with
\nit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“True compassion is correct\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ing them so in the future they can
\nbe law-abiding citizens,” Holt <\/span>said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Holt said he would seek a state <\/span>attorney general’s opinion on what
\nthe bill would do if passed. <\/span>He said
\nhe would delay further <\/span>action on it,
\nat least temporarily, <\/span>to allow the
\nattorney general to <\/span>respond.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The bill
\nis modeled after a sim\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ilar law in Arizona and support\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ed by the newly
\nformed group <\/span>Protect Arkansas
\nNOW. The group’s chairman is Joe Mc-Cutchen
\nof Fort Smith. “I know<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sen. Holt and Mr.
\nMcCutchen <\/span>say
\nthey’re pro-life,” Huckabee <\/span>said. “We’re trying to preserve <\/span>the life of someone
\nwho, when <\/span>born,
\nwill be an American citi\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>zen with his first breath- We can <\/span>spend $yOO on prenatal care when the mother is pregnant In\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>stead, this bill would have us take <\/span>a chance and spend $2,000 a day <\/span>at Children’s hospital if the ba\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>by’s born
\nand something has gone wrong. That’s anti-life.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Huckabee said he took excep\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>tion to characterization of im\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>migrants in the bill and by its supporters as exploiters of social <\/span>programs. “They pay sales taxes <\/span>on their groceries,” Huckabee <\/span>said.
\n“They pay fuel taxes. If they’re using a fake Social Secu\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>rity number, they’re paying So\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>cial Security taxes and will nev\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>er receive any benefit. It would <\/span>be closer
\nto the truth to say they’re subsidizing Joe Mc-<\/strong><\/span><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n



\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cutchen and Jim Holt more than <\/span><\/strong>the other way around,<\/span><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Something
\nthat’s not worth <\/span><\/strong>sharing is not worth
\ncelebrating,” <\/span><\/strong>Huckabee said.
\n“This is the kind <\/span><\/strong>of country that opens
\nits doors. <\/span><\/strong>This bill expresses
\nan un-Amer\u00c2\u00ad<\/span><\/strong>ican attitude.”<\/span><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n

McCutchen, reached by tele\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>phone at his home in Fort Smith, <\/span>repeated some of
\nHoit’s argu\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ments, including the one that the <\/span>people referred to in Holt’s bill <\/span>are in the United
\nStates illegally.<\/span><\/p>\n

“They broke the law,” he said. <\/span>“My angst is not with them, though. My angst is with
\nthe state and federal government for <\/span>not enforcing our laws.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

People living illegally in the <\/span>United State has “overwhelmed our
\nschool and welfare system,” <\/span>McCutchen said. As for whether <\/span>the bill reflects
\nun-Christian at\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>titudes, McCutchen said: “)im <\/span>Holt is as good a man and as<\/span><\/p>\n

good a Christian as any man walking this Earth.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Doggone
\nit, the rule of law is <\/span>not
\nbeing upheld, and that’s wrong,”
\nMcCutchen said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

McCutchen
\njoined Holt in a <\/span>news conference last week to an\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>nounce the forming of Protect <\/span>Arkansas NOW and to
\ndiscuss <\/span>plans
\nto file SB 206. Since that <\/span>news conference last Friday on <\/span>the state Capitol steps, Mc\u00c2\u00adCutchen was featured on the Web <\/span>page of the Southern Poverty Law <\/span>Center, which tracks membership <\/span>and activities of groups such as <\/span>the Ku Klux Klan. One group <\/span>tracked by the center is the Coun\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>cil of Conservative Citizeas, which <\/span>claimed McCutchen as a mem\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ber, according to the law center’s article. The

“To
\nanybody who will listen, <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

pense,” McCutchen said.
\nThe CCC “asked me to come up and <\/span>make a talk on illegal immigra\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>tion. The talk lasted 15 minutes <\/span>and I drove myself to Virginia to <\/span>give it. I financed that thing by <\/span>myself.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nletter of McCutchen’s was <\/span>reprinted in a magazine owned <\/span>by the CCC.
\naccording to the law <\/span>center Web site. “I did buy a list <\/span>of donors from the
\nAmerican Im\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>migration Council. I sent out a <\/span>letter to about 200 people telling <\/span>what I was
\ndoing,” McCutchen <\/span>said. “I suppose one of those let\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ters went out to
\nthis magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

“That was the end of
\nthat, I thought,” McCutchen said.
\n“I’m <\/span>just astounded by the
\nattention this has received. CNN (Cable <\/span>News Network) was at my home <\/span>Tuesday
\naftemoon The very next <\/span>morning, the
\nSouthern Poverty <\/span>Law Center sent this
\nout and the <\/span>segment on CNN is on
\nhold.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
