Little <\/span>ROCK \u00e2\u20ac\u201d
\nIn an impassioned <\/span>speech before hundreds of influ\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ential
\nHispanic civil rights leaders <\/span>from across the nation. Gov. Mike <\/u><\/span>Huckabee
\nsaid Wednesday that <\/span><\/u> <\/span> <\/span><\/span>America is great because it has always opened its doors
\nto people seeking a <\/u>better way of life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

“Do unto others as you would <\/span>have others do unto you,” Huck\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>abee said, citing the Golden Rule. <\/span>“I have tried to govern that way, <\/span>and
\nit stands to reason that I re\u00c2\u00adally do
\nbelieve that what made this <\/span>great country so great and so unique is that it has always been <\/span>a place for people to run to <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d and <\/span>not run from.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I would hope that no matter who we are, or where we are from, that America should always <\/span>be a
\nplace that opens its arms, opens it heart,
\nopens its spirit to <\/span>people who come because they want the best for their families _” Huckabee said as the largely
\nHis\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>panic audience gave him a stand\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ing
\novation.<\/p>\n

Huckabee was
\nthe keynote speaker, along<\/span><\/u> with Tyson <\/span>Foods, Inc. Chairman and CEO Jo<\/u>hn <\/span>Tyson at a noon luncheon of The <\/span>League of United Latin American Citizens, which is holding its 76th <\/span>annual convention in Little Rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

About 10,000 political, com\u00c2\u00admunity and business leaders, along <\/span>with exhibitors and speakers are <\/span>attending the convention at the<\/p>\n

In his opening remarks, Huck\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>abee said the nation will need to address the
\nconcerns of the His\u00c2\u00adpanic community because of its <\/span>growing influence and population <\/span>base.<\/p>\n

“Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the mi\u00c2\u00adnority,” Huckabee said jokingly as <\/span>the crowd roared in laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite several light moments, <\/span>Huckabee
\ndid not avoid several controversial issues
\nthat made him <\/span>a target of criticism during the 85th General Assembly. He said <\/span>Arkansas
\nneeds to make the tran\u00c2\u00adsition from a traditional Southern <\/span>state to one
\nthat recognizes and cherishes diversity
\n“in culture, in <\/span>language and in population”<\/p>\n

During the legislative
\nsession, <\/span>Huckabee criticized an
\nimmigra\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>tion bill by Republican Sens.
\nJim <\/span>Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes
\nof Fort Smith as un-Christ<\/span>ian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life.<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 206, which
\ndied in the Senate, would have required <\/span>proof of citizenship to register to <\/span>vote and also force state agencies <\/span>to report suspected cases of peo\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ple living in the country illegally. <\/span>Holt replied later to Huckabee’s comments that Christian charity <\/span>does
\nnot include turning a blind eye to lawbreaking.<\/p>\n

Huckabee also backed
\nlegisla\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>tion that would have opened
\nthe<\/span><\/span> door for illegal immigrants in Arkansas
\nto receive college schol\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>arships.\n<\/p>\n

House
\nBill 1525 by Rep. Joyce<\/span> Elliott, D-Little Rock, was ap\u00c2\u00adproved by the House but eventu-<\/span>ally failed in the Senate Huckabee<\/span> reiterated Wednesday that he be<\/span>lieves every child, regardless of their parents’ immigration status,<\/span> should have an opportunity to re\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>ceive an education in the United<\/span> States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before
\nHuckabee spoke, John<\/span> Tyson thanked the Hispanic com\u00c2\u00ad<\/span>munity for standing by the Spring<\/span>dale-based food giant during the<\/span> federal government’s investigation <\/span>of the company a few years ago. <\/span>The US.Justice Department investigation alleged that Tyson<\/u> helped to smuggle illegal aliens into th<\/u>e United States and employed them at various chicken-
\n<\/span>processing plants across the Southeast.<\/span>                       <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After a seven-week trial,
\nTyson <\/span>and several managers of
\npoultry <\/span>processing plants were
\nacquitted <\/span>in March 2003 of those
\ncharges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tyson also credited LULAC leaders for pushing the company<\/span> to add Hispanics to the Tyson board and promote more Latinos<\/span> to upper management and executive positions.<\/span>                     <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He also said in the last 15 years,
\n<\/span>the number of Hispanics who
\nwork for the Arkansas company     <\/span>
