\ndream along Interstate 30 and Interstate 40 into Arkansas. I also was reminded
\nof the global impact our small state and the <\/font><\/span>companies based
\nhere have had. I was traveling with our delegation along a dusty road in the
\nstate of Hidalgo when we suddenly came upon a new Wal-Mart Supercenter. There
\nare almost <\/font><\/span>150 Arkansas companies now exporting $250 million worth
\nof goods annually to Mexico. Arkansas’ exports to Mexico have almost tripled
\nsince before the North American Free Trade <\/font><\/span>Agreement took effect in
\n1994. Wal-Mart entered into a joint venture with Cifra with the <\/font><\/span>opening
\nof a Sam’s Club in Mexico City in 1991. Mexico became the first country in the
\ncompany’s international division. Wal-Mart acquired a majority position in
\nCifra in 1997. In <\/font><\/span>February 2000, the name of the company was changed to
\nWal-Mart de Mexico. Wal-Mart now <\/font><\/span>operates more than 600
\nunits with annual sales of $10.1 billion. The Wal-Mart stock is the <\/font><\/span>second
\nmost traded stock on the Mexican stock exchange. The Bentonville Company is
\nrepresented in 31 of the 36 Mexican states. Tyson Fo<\/u>ods of Springdale,
\nmeanwhile, began <\/font><\/span>operating in Mexico in 1994 through a joint venture.-
\nTyson now processes millions of chickens <\/font><\/span>and turkeys annually in
\nthe country. The company has almost 4,900 employees in Mexico and <\/font><\/span>has invested more
\nthan $50 million there during the past three years.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Companies such as Wal-Mart<\/u> and Tyson Food<\/u>s
\ncause Mexicans and others around the world <\/font><\/span>to realize Arkansas
\ntruly is the Land of Opportunity. These companies began in small <\/font><\/span>Arkansas
\ntowns and became global leaders in changing how people shop, eat and live. I
\nalso <\/font><\/span>had a chance to spend time with representatives from a
\nnumber of smaller Arkansas-based <\/font><\/span>businesses that sell
\ntheir products and services in Mexico. We’re doing everything possible to <\/font><\/span>expand the market for
\nArkansas products in other countries.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
